Guado al Melo is a family-owned winery run by Annalisa and Michele Scienza. Their father, Attilio Scienza, is a university professor and an authority on viticulture known around the world.
The farm is located in Murrotto, Castagneto Carducci, Livorno, in the heart of Tuscany, the DOC Bolgheri region. The underground cellar is totally environment-friendly and the company uses conventional and integrated farming methods.
The winery also includes a Biblioteca del Vino, a wine library with plenty of books about oenology (and not only), where special events are held to explain the wine world in a simple but exhaustive manner. From the so-called “barbatella”, the young vine plant, to bottling, here wine history is told to young people and adults, a great educational project!
In the cellar is a picture showing a well-known truth:
What do smell and taste tell us when we drink a wine produced in a place, in a setting we have never seen, from a land we have never walked on, and by people we have never looked in the eye and shaken our hands with? Little, very little”
cit. Mario Soldati
The products offered during the tasting reveal the winery’s style and a great ability to make genuine and balanced wines.
Antillo means “place full of sunshine”, which is one of the features of the vineyard where the Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot used to create this fabulous Bolgheri are from. After fermentation and maceration, the wine is aged in wood barrels for 12 months, then bottled and – after some more months – it is ready to drink!
Here is the special technical data sheet they prepare for each single wine. Their knowledge and expertise are unique!
Wine Princess suggests
Jassarte comes from the special “collection vineyard” created by Professor Attilio Scienza at Guado al Melo in order to study Mediterranean and Caucasian vines and how they can resist climate and territory changes. The vineyard is called “Campo Giardino” and is cultivated using the integrated farming method. The grapes are destemmed and pressed gently, then aged for 24 months in barrels and 12 months in the bottle.
Wine Princess has fallen in love with this wine … first of all because of the project – this wine is used to finance the studies on vines – and then because of the importance of studying when it comes to winemaking: one should never stop learning and trying, in any field! Well done Professor, Jassarte really impressed me!
Who should drink it: Those who love to discover the cultural richness that lies behind a bottle. A meaningful project.
When to drink it: While visiting the cellar at Guado al Melo. This wine expresses the history of wine!
A wonderful opportunity: A relaxing moment, while reading a good book about the origin of wine … or simply paired with wild boar stew! In both cases, have a glass and you’ll immediately feel more positive 😉
God save Guado al Melo!
