Only passion and love for the land can bear good fruit!
This is my definition of the Triacca Family. Domenico Triacca started its own wine production with a 2000 m2 vineyard in Valtellina, Valgella, in 1897. The “Gatta” estate in Bianzone, Sondrio, now covers 40 hectares and is run successfully by Giovanni and Luca Triacca. The family holds three more estates in Tuscany, totalling 140 hectares.
You can book a visit to the Casa Vinicola Triacca in Valtellina at any time of the year. The estate is a 1500 dominican monastery renovated in 2008. Its name comes from the former residents, the noble De Gatti family. The facility is surrounded by 13-hectare perfectly terraced vineyards.
As you walk and climb among the vineyards, you understand what it means to grow grapes in the mountains and perceive the potential of Nebbiolo grapes – named “Chiavennasca” in Valtellina. Besides this main vine, here they grow Pignola, Sauvingnon Blanc and even a Moscato Rosa, which is quite a surprise.
The product range includes two white, one sparkling and a dozen of red wines. I’d like to mention a special bottle, Giovanni Segantini (1858-1899) Valtellina Superiore DOCG. Dedicated to this famous artist and with his well-known picture “Mezzogiorno sulle Alpi” appearing on the label.
My favourite red wine is San Domenico Sforzato di Valtellina 2012. Sheer perfection!
In 2003, during a formal dinner with Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in Sondrio, they came up with the idea of developing something unusual and unique for this area, the production of a good Moscato Rosa. The President’s wife, after tasting the first sample, suggested naming this wine “Il Vino del Presidente” … and so it was!
Wine Princess suggests
Il Vino del Presidente is a careful selection of Moscato Rosa dried grapes grown in the high-altitude vineyards of the Tenuta “La Gatta”. An intense ruby coloured and flowery dessert wine with strong rose scents. Pleasant and round in the mouth, fine and perfect when paired with chocolate desserts.
Who should drink it: Everyone! So pleasant, it should be tasted at least once in a lifetime!
When to drink it: On a Saturday evening with friends, after dinner and paired with chocolate biscuits, like Baci di Dama. You’ll be enchanted by its elegance.
A wonderful opportunity: A visit to the Triacca vineyards, a trip to discover the Nebbiolo vine and taste the sweetness of the Moscato Rosa!
