Today I am going to tell you about a historical figure I really love, Sir Winston Churchill.
He was born in Blenheim Palace on 30 November 1874 and lived the most intense period of British history. Sir Winston managed to fully enjoy the opportunity of working for the Queen of England and at the same time fulfil his burdensome political tasks.
In the recent Netflix TV series “The Crown”, Sir Winston appears as a physically and especially mentally robust man. Educated and curious about life, he loves good food and good wine. He is a gourmet, a bon viveur! In short, a foodie, just like us…
If only I could turn back the hands of time and have dinner with him!
Sir Winston started to drink Champagne in the early 1900s in Reims, then he moved to Epernay where he met the Maison Pol Roger.
He liked Champagnes millésimés, especially the vintage 1925.
He bought such a huge quantity of Champagne that he became the best friend of Odette Pol Roger, daughter-in-law of the owners, and even named his beloved horse after Pol Roger.
When he died, the Champagne bottles were dressed in black and the White Foil variety adopted the dark label with the mourning band which still distinguishes Sir Winston Churchill Champagne.
A symbol of utmost respect … and a brilliant idea!
Ten years after Sir Winston’s death, Pol Roger started to trade the first vintage Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill. A secret assemblage, maybe the unique real Champagne of the world! Pinot noir and Chardonnay, his favourite blend.
I had the opportunity to taste this unique wine two years ago, and it was amazing.
While imagining dear Sir Winston sitting in front of me and saying one of his famous quotes: “Champagne should be dry, cold, and free” … I tasted the vintage 2006, with dry and citrus fruits scents and pleasant minerality. Very fine bubbles and well balanced.
Excellent!
And I share what Sir Winston once said during a session of the British government: “Remember gentleman, it’s not just France we’re fighting for, it’s Champagne!”
Wine Princess suggests

Who should drink it: those who love fine and structured Champagne.
A wonderful opportunity: while watching “The Crown”, in the Summer, air-conditioner on, with someone special beside you 😉
God save the Champagne!
